Differences between Fimbriae and Pili

Differences between Fimbriae and Pill

Fimbriae
1. They are shorter and thin
2. Their number is hundred per cell.
3. They are involved in forming biofilms.
4. Fimbriae help bacteria to colonize and adhere to the surfaces.
5. Fimbriae are not involved in conjugation.
6. They are found in both gr (+) and gr (-) bacteria.
7. Fimbriae are not as rigid as pili.
8. Formation of fimbriae is governed by bacterial genes in nucleoid region.

Pill
1. They are usually longer then fimbriae.
2. Number only one or two per cell.
3. They are involved in motility twitching and gliding motility.
4. They are used for transfer of DNA.
5. Some pili are involved in conjugation, they are called conjugation pili.
6. They are only found in gram (-) bacteria.
7. Pili are more rigid than fimbriae.
8. Formation of pili is governed by plasmid genes.
